Concrete Weight Calculator
Enter length, width and thickness, then the density of the concrete. The calculator returns the weight in pounds, in short tons and per square foot.
Worked example
- Volume = 4 x 4 x 4/12 = 5.33 cu ft.
- Weight = 5.33 x 150 lb per cu ft = 800 lb.
Common sizes at a glance
| Size | Weight | In tons |
|---|---|---|
| 1 cu yd | 4,050 lb | 2.03 short tons |
| 2 x 2 ft paver slab, 2 in | 100 lb | 0.05 short tons |
| 4 x 4 ft pad, 4 in | 800 lb | 0.40 short tons |
| 10 x 10 ft slab, 4 in | 5,000 lb | 2.50 short tons |
| Countertop 8 ft x 25 in, 1.5 in | 313 lb | 0.16 short tons |
Why the weight matters
People look up concrete weight for very different reasons: hauling out an old slab, checking what a trailer can carry, moving a precast step, or planning how a countertop will be supported. In each case the number to know is total pounds.
The worked example is a 4 x 4 ft pad at 4 in. It holds 5.33 cu ft of concrete and weighs about 800 lb, or 50 lb for every square foot.
Choosing a density
We default to 150 lb per cu ft, a common figure for normal concrete with stone. Concrete with steel in it weighs a bit more; lightweight mixes made with expanded aggregate weigh noticeably less.
If you know the mix, enter its density. If not, the default gives a sound planning figure for most poured slabs and pads.
Breaking out an old slab
Demolition is where weight surprises people most. A 10 x 10 ft slab at 4 in weighs about 5,000 lb, or 2.5 short tons. That is far more than most pickup beds are rated for in one load.
Ask the hauler or dumpster company for their weight limit before you start breaking. The demolition cost calculator helps plan the rest of a tear-out job.
Small pieces still add up
- A 2 x 2 ft paver slab at 2 in weighs about 100 lb.
- A cubic yard of ready-mix weighs about 4,050 lb once placed.
- An 8 ft countertop 25 in deep and 1.5 in thick weighs about 313 lb.
- Wet concrete in a wheelbarrow is heavier per load than you think, so do not overfill it.
Weight and what holds it up
A heavy pad or top is only as good as what is under it. Whether a deck, floor or cabinet can carry a given weight is a question for the local building code and a licensed professional, not a weight calculator.

Questions
How much does a yard of concrete weigh?
At 150 lb per cu ft it is about 4,050 lb, or just over 2 short tons.
How much does a 4 in slab weigh per square foot?
About 50 lb per square foot at the default density.
Is a short ton the same as a metric ton?
No. A short ton is 2,000 lb, the unit used by most U.S. haulers. A metric ton is about 2,205 lb.
