Vinyl Siding Cost Calculator

Updated · Source: BLS wage data

Start with the wall area you will cover, add a waste allowance and your own price per square foot. Add trim and accessories as one dollar figure, choose your state, and the tool adds installation hours at local wages.

A planning estimate, not a quote. Material prices are the ones you enter. Labor uses the median hourly wage for carpenters in your state (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025) and our estimate of hours, which you can change. Real bids vary.

Worked example

The example uses a sample price typed into the price field, only to show the math. Use the price your supplier quotes you.

  1. Materials: 1,650 sq ft x $3.00 (the price entered) = $4,950.
  2. Labor: 75 hours x $23.51 an hour (carpenters, median in Texas) = $1,763.

Wall area comes first

If you do not have the wall area yet, the siding calculator builds it from the perimeter, wall height, gables and openings. Enter the net area here, then let the waste field cover cuts.

Waste is applied before pricing. In the worked example, 1,500 sq ft plus 10% becomes 1,650 sq ft, and at $3.00 per sq ft that is $4,950 in panels.

Trim and accessories are a separate line

Vinyl siding needs a lot of small parts: starter strip, inside and outside corners, J-channel, window and door trim, and finish trim at the top of walls. Soffit and fascia are often priced in the same order. Add up your list and enter the total, because these parts are priced by the piece and do not track wall area closely.

Labor at your state's wage

We set hours from the wall area and multiply by the median carpenter wage in your state, from the BLS May 2025 survey. Texas carpenters earn a median of $23.51 an hour, so 75 hours comes to $1,763, with a range from the 25th to the 75th percentile wage.

The labor line uses the wage paid to workers, not the rate a company bills. A company adds overhead, insurance, equipment and profit on top, so expect a contractor's price to sit well above the labor figure here. Our method page explains how the hours are set.

Costs not in the total

Re-siding a house often turns up work that cannot be priced from wall area alone. Plan for these on your own:

  • Removing and hauling away the old siding.
  • House wrap, flashing tape and any new sheathing.
  • Repairing rot found once the old siding is off.
  • Permits where your town requires them.
  • Scaffolding or lifts for tall walls.
  • Gutters taken down and put back.

Questions

How much waste should I enter for vinyl siding?

About 10% for a simple house. Add more for many corners, gables or dormers.

Does this work for other siding types?

Yes, if you enter that product's price. Fiber cement and wood often take more labor hours than our vinyl estimate.

Is the labor figure what an installer charges?

No. It is the wage workers earn. A company adds overhead and profit to its bill.
