Drywall Mud Calculator
Enter the square feet of drywall you are finishing and the level of finish, and we turn it into gallons of joint compound, full buckets and feet of joint tape.
Worked example
- 500 sq ft / 100 x 0.9 gal = 4.50 gal.
- Premixed compound comes in 4.5 gal buckets: 1 buckets. Tape: about 50 ft per 100 sq ft.
Common sizes at a glance
| Size | Joint compound | 4.5 gal buckets | Joint tape |
|---|---|---|---|
| 200 sq ft | 1.8 gal | 1 | 100 ft |
| 500 sq ft | 4.5 gal | 1 | 250 ft |
| 1,000 sq ft | 9.0 gal | 2 | 500 ft |
| 2,000 sq ft | 18.0 gal | 4 | 1,000 ft |
| 4,000 sq ft | 36.0 gal | 8 | 2,000 ft |
Where the area number comes from
Use the same area you used to order sheets: walls plus ceiling, minus large openings. If you have not worked that out yet, the drywall calculator gives it to you along with the sheet count.
Patching jobs are different. For a few repairs, a small tub is enough, and this tool will overshoot because it assumes every seam in the room gets taped.
How finish level changes the amount
The default rate of about 0.9 gallon per 100 sq ft fits a standard finish: tape coat, fill coat and a final coat on seams and screw heads. That is what most painted walls in a home get.
A smooth finish under bright side light or glossy paint often adds a thin skim over the whole surface. That can roughly double the compound, so raise the rate in the calculator if you plan to skim.
Buckets, bags and boxes
Premixed compound is sold in buckets of about 4.5 gallons and in smaller tubs. We round up to whole buckets, so 500 sq ft at the default rate is 5 gallons, or 2 buckets.
Setting compound comes as a dry powder in bags. It hardens by a chemical reaction instead of drying, which makes it good for the first coat and deep fills. Mix only what you can spread in its working time.
Tape: paper or mesh
We figure about 50 ft of tape per 100 sq ft of board. Paper tape is the usual choice for inside corners and flat seams. Self-adhesive mesh is quick on flat joints but should be covered with setting compound to resist cracks.
A roll of paper tape goes a long way, so one extra roll is cheap insurance against a trip back mid-job.
Small habits that save compound
- Keep the bucket lid on and scrape the sides down, so dried crumbs do not end up in your next coat.
- Thin the final coat slightly with clean water for a smoother pass.
- Sand lightly between coats instead of piling on more mud to hide ridges.
- Prime the finished walls before painting; the paint calculator shows a primer amount too.
Questions
How much joint compound for 1,000 sq ft of drywall?
At about 0.9 gallon per 100 sq ft, plan on 9 gallons, which is 2 buckets of 4.5 gallons.
Is all-purpose compound fine for every coat?
It works for all three coats. Some people prefer a lighter topping compound for the last coat because it sands more easily.
How long does premixed mud last once opened?
Sealed with a lid and a thin layer of water on top, an opened bucket usually keeps for weeks. Throw it out if it smells sour or has dark spots on top.
